Adventures in Ideas is an online literary journal that explores the intersection between travel and ideas. Because travel is as much an intellectual affair as it is a physical one, we believe that travel writing is most enriching when it engages with the world of ideas. Please subscribe to our mailing list to get notified when we publish our inaugural issue and additional calls for submissions.
Issue #1 – Movement and Stillness
Submissions are currently open for our inaugural issue on the theme of movement and stillness. We welcome travel narratives, essays, features, articles, etc. that explore the ideas of movement and/or stillness, broadly understood.
Editorial dates & deadlines
Please submit by 31 December 2020. Editorial decisions will be made after the new year.

What we publish
We are primarily interested in ideas-driven travel articles and essays. We also accept book excerpts for forthcoming titles and thematic reviews for the journal. We are keen to read experimental writing, photo essays, reported features, and the like. We do not publish listicles, commercial travel writing, or travelogues that do not engage with larger issues and ideas.
We are a small literary journal. But, unlike other literary journals, we are happy to be in a position to offer each contributor an honorarium of $75 for their contribution upon publication in our themed journal issues. Honoraria are awarded via PayPal. Unfortunately, book excerpts and blog posts do not qualify for honoraria.
Adventures in Ideas is run by volunteers committed to our vision of publishing idea-driven travel stories. We do not charge reading fees for submissions. Please submit only original, previously-unpublished work in the English language. Submit a double-spaced .doc or a .docx file only (no PDFs please). We have a strong preference for submissions that are between 1,500 and 3,000 words. Email submissions to info (at) adventuresinideas.com Please include a cover letter with the following information: your name, your contact information, your social media and website links, a brief introduction to your submission and its word count, whether or not you’re submitting this work elsewhere, a brief bio we’ll use for the website if accepted, where your writing has appeared in the past, etc. If accepted, we will ask for photos, preferably in landscape orientation, to publish alongside the article. We ask for first digital world rights in the English language for a period of 90 days beginning on the publication date. All rights revert back to the creator after 90 days excepting the right for Adventures in Ideas to continually publish the work in digital form. If the work appears elsewhere in original or modified form after the 90-day period, you agree to acknowledge that it first appeared in Adventures in Ideas. Due to our limited staff, we cannot respond to all submissions with detailed comments as to why they were not selected. We apologize, but we do hope that you will continue to submit.
We may invite submissions that are not accepted for the journal and submissions unrelated to the theme of the forthcoming issue to be published in the Adventures in Ideas blog. All the guidelines generally apply to blog submissions excepting the honoraria.
We look forward to reading your work.
